Introduction

Many case manufacturers vie for the title of a ‘Water Cooling Ready Product’ however few actually get it right, many even ‘half-attempt’ this by drilling three holes at the back of the chassis and say it is compatible with Water Cooling. However, the consumer is not so easily fooled and neither are the writers at Overclockers Tech. As far as we are concerned, if the product is unable to accommodate at least one 240mm sized radiator, then it is our opinion it is not fit for the purpose.

There are few cases out there than can accommodate water cooling as easily as air, however one company thinks it has this combination just right. This would be the company we all know as CoolerMaster and the product in question is their New ‘Storm Trooper’ chassis.

In all honesty this case seems to have caused a stir in the water cooling world; however it is time we took our objective eye over the product to determine what can be gleaned.

Company Background

Cooler Master was founded with the mission of providing the industry’s best thermal solutions. Since its establishment a decade ago, the company has remained faithful to this mission, emerging as a world leader in products and services for companies dealing with devices where heat issues must be resolved.

In pursuing this mission, Cooler Master is absolutely committed to delivering solutions that precisely meet customer requirements for features, performance, and quality. Moreover, we strive to be a reliable long-term partner for our customers that they can truly depend on. It aims to be the first and foremost name that comes to mind for companies around the world seeking thermal solutions, and seeks to build such a reputation through outstanding technology, sophisticated design, and superior service.

Introduction

What makes a computer case special? Is it because it has plenty of storage space or lots of fancy lights? Maybe it is for the reason that it is great for water cooling? All these questions and more must be answered when purchasing a computer case.

We at OverclockersTech have reviewed many computer cases ranging from the unusual Lian Li T1 Spider chassis. To the enormous Coolermaster Haf X and the Thermaltake Level 10 GT. Now we bare the latter mentioned cases in mind and then finally throw in the behemoth-like ‘Mountain Mods’ cases into the mix and the result is an interesting brew indeed.

A few short months ago our very own ‘Lvcoyote’ gave the Thermaltake Chaser MK1 a gold award and when reviewing this product with the eye of air cooling, and it richly deserved our coveted award. However, let us now review the same product but looking at it from the viewpoint of a water cooling enthusiast! Will the product still receive a gold award even when factoring in its great air cooling potential? Or will it slip down the scales slightly? Only an in depth review from a water coolers viewpoint will reveal the truth.

Here at Overclocker’s Tech we have two sides in the industry. We have our esteemed fellow reviewer ‘Lvcoytote whom is our ultimate guru when it comes to air cooling and yours truly for water and the more exotic forms temperature control. With this in mind we have decided to once again review the Thermaltake Chaser MK1, however ‘we have a twist in the tale’, as this time we are taking a look at the LCS (Or Liquid Cooled Solution) version of the same case.

Before moving on make sure you catch ‘LV’s’ fantastic and informative review at:

Thermaltake-chaser-mk1-case-review

Company Background

We live in a world where most things seem to move at the speed of light. At Thermaltake, we feel the same way and that is exactly how Thermaltake conducts itself to deliver innovative, reliable and customer-centric solutions to the worldwide market.

Since the beginning of Thermaltake in 1999, it has been at the forefront of creating new and exciting products at a time where most computer users were provided little to no choices for components that may seem irrelevant, but in reality crucial to the performance of a PC.

While still a relatively young company, established in 1999, Thermaltake is built on unwavering will and dedication to address issues and innovate at the same time for computer enthusiasts and corporate users worldwide .

Customers are our greatest asset and Thermaltake does not take that for granted. That is why Thermaltake is the industry leading in customer service and customer support with around-the-clock automated product return service.”

Some, as the phrase goes, may say ‘Silence is Golden’ and in some situations this can be true. In the performance cooling world, silence is the last thing that is wanted. However, for those who just want a good computer that performs well and is fairly quiet to boot (pun intended) then accommodations must be made. No chassis can be 100 percent silent as air needs to be drawn into the case and then expelled again. However, efforts can be made to both reduce vibration and sound proof various parts of the chassis. Entrance CoolerMaster; they believe they have the answer to the silent computer world, so without further ado let us investigate their latest chassis product, the Silencio 550.

Company Background

Cooler Master was founded with the mission of providing the industry’s best thermal solutions.
Cooler Master’s current business encompasses a comprehensive lineup of thermal solutions for a full range of applications. Its products range from heat sinks and fans to component housing, chassis, and ducting for computers, industrial machinery, telecommunications equipment, and many other devices.

Specifications:

Near silent operation and prepared to take on powerful hardware, the Cooler Master Silencio is able to keep high-end setups running cool and quiet. Sound proofing on both side panels assist in vastly reducing noise levels. A sleek mirror finish front panel and clean lines present a minimalistic design aesthetic that speaks to its silent interior.

Introduction

Since the dawn of enthusiast computing, cases have come in all shapes and sizes-ranging from the large off-white box which (In Monty Python style) would ‘slice our hands off at the wrist’ to the more elegant and expensive of chassis. In the ‘ye-olde’ days a typical case would be a beige monstrosity with a ‘turbo’ button and a speed indicator in order to show off how fast it is. If this was not bad enough the insides were made from sheet-tin, and unwary hands could receive serious injury as a result. The hazards would be double if you were brave enough to invest in a ‘budget case.’ At that time a low-cost product would be around £60 sterling and ‘my’ have times changed.

Watch the video review and find out why we at Overclockers Tech find this chassis wonderful to work with.

Conclusion:

We at Overclockers Tech find this chassis wonderful to work with. It is rare for a case at this price to be able to fit a water cooling radiator (as large as a 360mm) without having to ‘modify’ the chassis. Additionally, with a small amount of modification a second radiator (a 240mm) can be added to enable a dual loop system. Although the case is made from steel, the quality of the case is still apparent.

The top panel, where the power on/reset switches are, is easy to access and includes a slide cover for any unwanted use. Internally the Haf-x has a lot to brag about with its wire management system and hot swappable bays. Although for some reason Coolermaster has not made the presence of a system of managing the eight-pin EPS connector. This is partly caused by the manufacturing of the CPU inspection hole a little too large. The only other flaw we found is the use of ‘castor wheels’ as not everyone installs the case underneath their desk and some people like to have their computer on the desk in order to ‘show off’ their system, this is in addition to some bare wires (instead of being braided) In this case (pardon the pun) some people may say that ‘it is a computer not a luggage trolley.’

We also like the ‘hot-swap’ bay feature which will come in very handy for the enthusiast sector of the market. Having said the former we feel that the Coolermaster HAF-X really is a quality case and has some outstanding features. When we give a product a gold we at Overclockers Tech like to see some truly creative features and Coolermaster have certainly achieved this. It is our pleasure to give the HAF-X a 9/10 award and therefore a gold.

This chassis can be purchased at www.watercooled-pcs.co.uk for only £139.50
